STRADIVARI VIOLIN Walkthrough | Native Instruments

Hello and welcome to this overview videofor STRADIVARI VIOLIN a meticulously sampled instrument thatcaptures the authentic sound of a treasuredone-of-a-kind instrument from the world's most renowned violin makerAntonio Stradivari. STRADIVARI VIOLIN has been developed together withe-instruments and runs within native instrumentsKontact Player with full NKS functionality

Even those with only a passing interestin musical instruments will have heard of the famous stringinstruments crafted by Antonio Stradivariin the 1700s

They're world-renowned and only a few hundred have survived intothe modern day This particular violin the StradivariVesuvius was sampled in the Auditorium Giovanni Arvediin Cremona Italy the town where the violin was built in 1727

The concert hall has been specificallydesigned with these particular string instruments in mindto ensure that the painstaking recording process was as flawless as possiblenearby roads were cordoned off, parking lots closedand residents of the city were encouraged to drive as slowly aspossible to keep the surrounding noise to a minimum

It was truly a one-off experience for the city. In this short walk through i'll be taking a look at all aspects of theinstrument including some key areas where it standshead and shoulders above other sampled violins. Although thesamples have been precisely tuned in post-productionno samples have been stretched. In other words every single note is a truerecording which preserves the purest possible toneof the instrument

There are three different types oflegato transitions performance captured vibrato. Phasealigned stereo samples for smooth dynamic expressionand use the controlled finger position There are also 20 articulationsplus an incredibly playable virtuoso mode which combines multiplearticulations for real-time playing without keyswitching or editing resulting in fast and expressiveperformances So let's dive in this is the maininterface with most of the important settings in the lower halfon the left hand side are performance controls for dynamics and vibratoon the right is the position control for choosing where any given note is playedon the fingerboard of the violin. resulting in a range of timbre

Thesecentral buttons provide customizable key switchingfor choosing any of the 20 different articulations.Click into each articulation button to change the articulation. There's a full range of different styles including five different types of short articulations Four expressive options complete withspeed and tempo syncing controls Three dynamic performances And four special techniques A quick note on the trills there arehalf and whole step options controlled by velocity and a toggle forportamento or rebo transitions

These articulations have three differenttypes of legato which can be selected herefingered legato longer portamento transitions and bowed legato which changes bowdirection on each new note It's also possible to force a bow changeusing the key switch shown here and that key switch position can bechanged just here

A quick mention for the modeledconsortino option just here which enables muted playing a completelydifferent timbre. Here's the virtuoso performance optionwhich is something a little special The virtuoso articulation intelligentlycombines multiple articulations and legato types, controlled by velocityand the pitch bend wheel making this a great choice for freestyleplaying or sketching out ideas Play with high velocity for marcato andlow velocity for a regular sustain Velocity also controls the legato stylewith adjustable settings and velocity response to switch between portamentoor fingered and bowed legato

Combining these playing styles with thepitch bend wheel up for spicatissimo and down for staccatogives you lots of control over your performance without needing to touch the keyswitches Click here to open the mixer windowwhere you can adjust microphone positions and the level of room noise.STRADIVARI VIOLIN was recorded using 32 separate microphonesand the instrument is supplied with two different patches, each with a different mix down of the mic positions the patch i'm showing herehas mic level sliders for close mid and far Careful setting of the three micpositions can give everything from an intimate chamber soundto a spacious concert hall This fader dials in room ambience toprovide additional realism and glue the performance together

There's also another patch that islighter on ram and cpu and that contains one bespoke stereo mix Click here to open the fingerboardoptions. Because this violin has been captured chromaticallywith no re-pitched samples the resulting fingering is as close to real life aspossible essential for a realistic violinperformance

By default the fingerboard setting issmart which intelligently reproduces the finger and string selection of theperformer For example this motif moves arounddifferent strings in the same area of the fingerboardwhere the player would use fingering on different strings. Whereas this run of chromatic notes inreal life would be performed on just one string moving up and down the fingerboard

See how the engine chooses the same stringin this case If you're looking for a particular soundfor example the softer and more delicate timbre of a lower stringor brighter metallic zing of a higher stringyou can force the engine to favor that kind of fingering with this toggleswitch to high string and low string modes. It's also possible to force open stringsby using this user configurable key switch Click here to open the performance panelfor precise control over dynamics and vibrato.First dynamics you may well be familiar with using your mod wheel to crossfadebetween different dynamic layers Unfortunately with many sampled soloinstruments this can sound unrealistic because at the midpoint between twolayers you're actually hearing two samples playing simultaneously

With STRADIVARI VIOLIN special attention has been paidto these long multi-mic samples. All of the sustained samples of the variousdynamic layers have been phase aligned in post-production.   This ensures a buttery smooth crossfadebetween them.

You won't hear two competing samplesnor any phase issues A quick mention for this control, whichassigns the short note dynamics either to keyboard velocity or midicontroller. Let's talk about the violin vibratowhich has been implemented here in an innovative way.Traditionally sampled instruments have achieved a semblance of vibratoperformance in two ways and they both have their problems

If yourecord the vibrato within the sample then there's no control over the speedor intensity upon playback Whereas if you use an LFO to automatepitch and volume of a sustain then that sounds artificial and lacksgenuine emotion With STRADIVARI VIOLIN you get full andrealistic control over the instrument's vibratoperformance The characteristics of real-life vibratoperformances have been captured with all the musicality and humannuances

Then these characteristics are reappliedto non-vibrato samples resulting in a full range of expressive vibrato optionswith full control over the playback Within the interface you can adjust rateand depth of vibrato and there's a range of authentic vibratopresets too of course these parameters are alreadymapped to NKS controls and can also be assigned to any externalcontroller with a right click I hope you've enjoyed this brief look atSTRADIVARI VIOLIN to learn how you can integrate thisunique violin instrument into your own musichead to the product page for more information and audio demos.
